Let me begin by saying that I'm not trying to supplant Frankenoid's Saturday Morning Garden Blogging.
It's just that, even though it's the beginning of January, I just ordered seeds for spring and am getting to rearrange my home for starting them.
And I'm really, really excited about it. Winter's okay, I suppose, but every spring and summer --- and to an extent, fall --- I get to work on turning this place (which was buried beneath a foot of trash when I bought it) into one big fat garden.
And I still have a long way to go. And sometimes, I really do question my sanity --- whatever possessed me to think that I could turn a few acres which had been totally neglected for gawd knows how many years into a garden paradise? But that hasn't stopped me yet!
And I honestly can't wait until the day comes to pull out my filthy ragged jeans and my shit kicker's Lil Abner boots and my hideous tee-shirts which disgrace the entire community, and get back to work.
And that day is almost here, believe it or not.
The seeds I've purchased so far for this year:
Golden Sunrise Tomato
Costoluto Fiorentino Tomato
Anise
Cilantro
Stridolo O Sclopit (supposedly a cross between tarragon and arugula)
Vanilla Grass
Italian Eggplant
Zucchini Romanesco
Cupid's Darts
Hollyhock - Indian Spring
I also have some four o'clocks of varied colors someone gave me and a mess of seeds from Monarch Watch. And containers and containers of nicotiana (although that appears to have become a permanent fixture) and basil and tri-color pole beans and even some fava I've been worrying over. And I'll be replanting moonflowers and lion's ear and loofah and daisies.
I have my eye on some moon and stars watermelon, too.
I'm also now officially starting my hunt for rabbit-eye blueberries, as I lost some bushes this past year, thanks to drought and extreme heat. And I am sorely tempted to plant some crab-apple trees, although if I could find good Sun Crest Peaches, that would be my choice.
Needless to say, Epitaph for a Peach is on my reading list.
So, before I finish this pot of coffee and start moving the furniture around ... any gardeners up? farmerchuck, you out there? Anyone awake yet?
