I've decided to join the throngs of people who've committed to buying nothing unessential for a set period of time --- a week, a month, even a year --- and I'm curious to find out if there are any Kosmopolitans doing this.
My reasons are pretty varied. First, I definitely want to see how much money I can save. I'm also tired of junk --- I've been cleaning junk out for three years now and I still have way too much of it. All this junk is really annoying and time consuming.
And I believe that refusing to buy stuff I don't absolutely need is a profoundly ecological thing to do. Good gawd, the plastic bags that won't get used! The tape saved!!
There's also a psychological element to it all --- I'm very curious to see just how deeply consumerism is embedded in my consciousness and how I'll react to being, um, deprived of buying stuff.
I'm trying it for a month and, depending on how that goes, may decide to commit for one year of buying nothing.
Anyone else here doing this?
If you've never heard of this before, here's a review of the book Not Buying That. I'd tell you more about it except ... I can't buy it :=D and it's not at my library.
